Street lighting – the facts

by veronicagerman on 20 December, 2008

Council bosses have agreed to implement a scheme to save £450,000 a year by turning off and restricting the number of street lights burning in Torfaen.
To begin with lights on major roads such as Llanfrechfa Way will be affected.  Junctions, roundabouts, pedestrian crossings and central islands will remain illuminated.
The next phase will involve installing timers to turn lights off between midnight and 5.30 am on the columns that will take them.
The final phase affects the remaining areas where it is proposed to leave 1 in every 3 street lights illuminated.
However – it is important that you have your say on what happens in this area.  There will be an exhibition of the proposals for Llanyrafon at the Social Centre on Wednesday 18th February between 2pm and 7pm.  Please come along and give your views.  You can also ring the contact centre on 01495 762200.
Cllr Veronica German  says, “It is important that we use our energy and money sensibly.  Safety to residents must be a primary concern, and I am pleased that the views of local people are being sought.”
